Scale Inconsistencies?

Posted on June 9, 2019June 16, 2019 by John

The RENPHO Bluetooth Body Fat Scale arrived Friday and I have been taking baseline readings. So far it seems like a decent scale.  I like that it saves the data to my phone so I can track over time.  I just did some quick research on the web and this seems to be a popular choice.  I probably should have gotten the same scale as the gym for consistency.

Not surprisingly there are some discrepancies with the measurements I got on the KMA scale. A bit more surprising is the discrepancy I am seeing on the same scale. (Note: I have not started the diet or workout yet.)

At the gym this was my first weigh-in (clothed minus shoes and I think wallet):

  • Weight: 187.6lbs
  • BF%: 20.8

These are my readings on the RENPHO (Weight/BF%):

  • Fri (PM): 184.8, 23.9 (scantily clad and after a poor choice in meal)
  • Sat (AM): 182.6, 23.4 (naked)
  • Sun (AM): 181.8, 23.2 (naked)

I don’t think the weight differences are very significant and mostly can be due to clothing.  Also, Saturday was after a shower and Sunday was before so wet hair, water intake, intestines content, etc may account for variability there.

The body fat measurements between home and gym seem  bit off and likely due to calibration and sensitivity of the devices, so I will post both home and gym measurements when doing my weekly weigh-ins.   Will be interested (to me at least!) to see how these discrepancies progress over time.
